Dr. Verhoogen entered solo practice of Orthopedics in Spokane in 1976. Because he had superior training in the treatment of sports injuries while at Duke University, he focused his early practice on sports medicine. Dr. Verhoogen became the team physician for a number of programs, including professional baseball at the AAA level, semi-pro football, Senior Amateur hockey, Whitworth College, and a local high school. Since no sports oriented physical therapy was available locally, in association with three physical therapists he founded Spokane Sportsmedicine, an outstanding facility, which eventually grew to eight clinics.

Dr. Verhoogen’s practice began at the advent of arthroscopic surgery. He was one of the first three orthopedic surgeons performing this new technique in Spokane, when instruments were crude by today’s standards. Dr. Verhoogen has maintained expertise in the realm of arthroscopic surgery of the knee, ankle, and shoulder as the science has evolved over the past 35 years.

Also, while a resident at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane in 1969, Dr. Verhoogen assisted on the first eight total hip replacements done in Spokane, using a very early version of the metal-on-metal prostheses. Then, while at Duke University, Dr. Verhoogen assisted on, or performed, literally hundreds of joint replacement surgeries. He, in fact, performed the first Coonrad total elbow replacement done anywhere, a prosthesis still used today.

Dr. Verhoogen has continued to perform joint replacement surgery since entering private practice in 1976, and has maintained proficiency in new techniques as they have evolved. He offers the latest in new prosthesis designs, techniques on minimally invasive and less invasive surgery, and rapid recovery programs.

Although Dr Verhoogen’s practice now focuses on joint replacement surgery, he still treats a wide array of orthopedic problems including rotator cuff injuries, elbow tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, hip bursitis, knee injuries, ankle ligament sprains and ruptures, bunions etc.

Dr. Verhoogen no longer takes Emergency Room call for acute injuries requiring immediate attention. He limits his practice to elective and semi-elective surgeries.
